Speech team consists of individual or duet events that are performed in front of small groups. Students compete with other schools to win awards, go to sectionals, and hopefully state! The events offered include dramatic duet acting (DDA), dramatic interpretation (DI), oratorical declamation (DEC), extemporaneous speaking (EXT), humorous duet acting (HDA), humorous interpretation (HI), impromptu speaking (IMP), informative speaking (INF), original comedy (OC), original oratory (OO), poetry (POE), prose (PRO), radio (RAD), and special occasion speaking (SOS). Below are explanations of each event.
DDA- Presentation of dramatic selections from a play by 2 people
DI- Oral presentation of dramatic literature, play, etc.
DEC- Presentation of persuasive or inspirational material of literary merit
EXT- Limited 45 prep to create a 6 minute speech on current events
HDA- Presentation of humorous selections from a play by 2 people
HI- Oral presentation of humorous literature, play, etc.
IMP- limited 2 minute prep to create a 6 minute speech on a quote/words/phrases
INF- Original speech to inform
OC- Original work intended to be humorous
OO- Original work intended to persuade
POE- Reading/interpreting poetry
PRO- Reading/interpreting prose
RAD- limited 45 minute prep to create a 5 minute radio broadcast
SOS- Original work intended to entertain; also considered an "after dinner" speech
Tournaments are on Saturdays and run from early in the morning to returning to school roughly around 6 p.m.. Students are required to practice with me at least once a week for 15 minutes. The sign up is on my door, or I can make specific arrangements if a student has a scheduling problem. I am extremely excited to be coach this year, and have high hopes for our team!
